The roots of Avon Village Center trace back to the early 1800s, when William Bickford’s invention of the safety fuse led to the founding of The Ensign-Bickford Company in Connecticut. As the company expanded through the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became a global leader in explosive safety technology while acquiring extensive land holdings in Avon. Much of that land would later be redeveloped into what is now Avon Village Center, blending the town’s industrial legacy with a modern retail destination.
